Some people you may meet at CAMHS
Community Nurse (Tier 1)
Will have a nursing qualification and a mental health qualification aswell and possibly a qualification in young person mental health.
May also have therapy qualifications.
Emotional Health Worker (Tier 1)
Work at a number of levels and in varied settings, eg, with individual children or young people, in a group, at a family/home location or in the local community, school, college, or other setting to support young people experiencing minor difficulties to:
Have someone to talk to, to achieve in life and receive praise, to feel positive about themselves, to feel included and remembered and to have support and encouragement with school and education
Social Worker
Will have a qualification in social care. They are involved in the assessment of the young person and sometimes also do therapy work. A social worker working as part of the CAMHS team is not a child care social worker, who would work for social services.
Art Therapist
An art therapist has qualifications in therapy as well as a qualification in art therapy.
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a doctor who has extra qualifications in mental health. Within CAMHS there are two types of psychiatrists: a child and adolecent psychiatrist, who treats both children and adolescents, and an Adolecent psychiatrist, who specialises in treating adolescents (teenagers) with mental health problems. It is your psychiatrists job to diagnose you and treat you, and prescribe the medications that you are on. No one else in the CAMHS team is qualified to prescribe you medication.
Psychologist
Psychologists will have a degree in behavioural sciences. Unlike psychiatrits, the do not have a medical degree and cannot prescribe you medication. Psychologist are able to offer you emotional support and counselling.
