Mapping the Maze - an Evaluation of the Maze Advocacy Project
In January 2008, Dr Jane Dalrymple, Faculty of Health & Social Care, University of the West of England, undertook an evaluation of the project’s services in Cardiff and Somerset, in order to identify the outcomes ahieved for young people by Maze. Her findings were published in November 2008. One of the key findings was that:
“The collective experiences of the young people, advocates and adults requesting advocacy for a young person indicated that working on practical outcomes had a positive effect on young people’s mental health.
Advocacy was not just about the practical issues however, but was also about the process – empowering young people, developing self esteem, and self confidence. Whether or not a practical outcome was achieved, the process of being listened to and respected was just as important. Maze’s services ultimately appear to have been therapeutic in terms of benefits to young people.”
